The Story So Far. Chapter Five: “The Gangster’s Daughter” (Jan 28th)

Uni and her Ukelele

Everyone heads down to “Betty’s Function House and Bar” on Thursday night to witness the final events unfold. The place is packed with Wellington City’s criminal underworld: gangsters, molls, heavies, toughs, shysters, hustlers and hoods.

Betty is standing at the bar when Sam bursts in. [You can read the actual script here.]

Sam reveals that “Betty Black” is actually “Betty Ruz” – El Jefe’s daughter! He calls @badtom from the crowd to cover him as he confronts her with the truth.

Betty’s been planning all along to take over her father’s role running the Coffee Cartel in the Cuba District, and she was to make it official tonight – at the annual meeting.

Betty’s plan had been going smoothly until she got a message from Howard Regent, who had finally worked up the courage to inform her about her late Fathers will. Having learned the contents of the will, Betty convinced crooked detective Charlie Bennett to silence the lawyer – permanently.

Betty made Charlie ‘investigate’ the Regent case, to cover their tracks and to find out where the will was hidden. Under the pressure of investigating a murder he committed himself, Charlie cracked. Betty was forced to kill him, and now had two murders to cover up – with the will still missing.

She moved to pin both of the murders on Sam, planting the murder weapon – Charlie’s gun – in his office and giving him just enough information for the investigation to implicate him.

Betty denies all this, but as Sam says he’s going to take her in, her resolve strengthens:

Standoff

“I can’t let you do that Sam. Look you’re a nice guy. I’m a nice girl… sort of… I never meant for it to get to this point. You were supposed to be a fall guy, not someone I was going to fall for. But this is my town now, and I’m certainly not going to let YOU get in my way!”

Betty shoots at Sam, and misses. Sam returns fire, as does @badtom.
Betty falls into Sam’s arms, fatally wounded.

As she gasps out her last breath, Betty admits: “I love you.”
Sam replies, “I know”.

As the gunshots ring out, Frank bursts into the scene with backup from @mrjudkins and @zeronaut. He arrests Sam for the murders of Charlie Bennett, Howard Regent and Betty Black. @badtom is taken away too, as an accomplice.
